V J Donegan & Co Ltd were contracted to build an access chamber onto an existing brick culvert to provide an outfall for surface water from a new large housing development for Bellway Homes. With limited tender information on the ground conditions and location of the existing culvert which was some 13m deep.

Scope of Works

  • Turnkey package, including ground investigation works
  • Survey works of the 600 dia deep culvert to establish an accurate line and level
  • Liaison with United Utilities to gain statutory permission for the works
  • With all investigations and approvals to be completed within a tight 6-week programme to allow the main works to be undertaken during the school holidays
  • Construction of a 3.6m dia caisson shaft to a depth of approx. 13m onto the centre of the 600mm pipework
  • Stabilising of the 600mm brickwork culvert in order to complete benching works
  • Installation of a 10m height 250mm ductile iron backdrop pipe to take the flows from the new surface water sewers into the outfall culvert
  • Cover slab installation, carriageway reinstatement and surfacing
  • Installation of a GRP access ladder complete with intermediate landing platforms
