Case Study
Manchester Airport
AMCOGiffen contracted V J Donegan & Co. Ltd to deliver the core civil engineering package supporting the Pier 2 transformation at Manchester Airport. Working airside within a live, security-critical environment, our team constructed new surface-water and foul drainage (including foul tank and pumping arrangements with kiosk), installed a new fire main, and delivered an extensive pit-and-duct network to serve power and communications. We provided full supervision, labour, plant and temporary works, coordinating closely with the Client’s team to maintain safe, uninterrupted operations.
Client Scope
Reconfigure and upgrade airfield infrastructure to serve the new pier, including: surface-water and roof drainage, foul drainage with foul tank/pumps and kiosk interfaces, a new fire-main route with sectional tie-ins, and a rationalised pit-and-duct network – all delivered within an operational airport boundary and alongside other framework contractors.
Scope of Works
- Surface-water & foul-water drainage – Construction of new roof, surface and foul water drainage lines, including chambers, connections and commissioning support for foul tank and pump arrangements.
- Fire main installation – Installation, testing and controlled tie-ins of the airfield fire main, planned around possession windows and low-traffic periods to minimise operational impact.
- Pit-and-duct network – Build-out of a new utilities corridor with chambers, multi-way duct banks and draw pits to support power, communications and future systems expansion.
- Chambers, structures & reinstatement – Construction and fit-out of chambers, formation build-ups and high-spec reinstatement suitable for airfield loadings.
- Temporary works, logistics & access – Airside-compliant temporary works, lift plans, traffic management and delivery sequencing to keep the programme moving safely whilst keeping airport disruptions to a minimum.
Contract Challenges
- Live airfield operations – Phased working area isolations to maintain safe aircraft/vehicle segregation and keep site operations uninterrupted.
- Security & airside compliance – Inductions and RAMS aligned to MAG requirements. Movements and deliveries followed pre-cleared routes and working times altered to suit airside day to day operations.
- Multi-party interfaces – Regular coordination with AMCOGiffen, MAG/Mace and sub- contractors to ensure critical path activities were met.
Outcome / Client benefits
- Resilient airfield drainage capacity and compliance to support Pier 2 operations.
- Future-proof utilities via a clean, rationalised pit-and-duct network for power and systems growth.
- Safe, predictable delivery achieved through disciplined sequencing, airside controls and stakeholder coordination.
