Aqueduct Road & Bolton Road, Blackburn

Part of United Utilities larger Blackburn UID’s scheme Donegan were awarded this project which would resolve 2 separate unsatisfactory discharges into the River Darwen.

The resultant work would ensure that the new Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) chambers would comply with the Environmental Agency requirement to reduce the number of spills per year and screen any spills.

The 2 working areas were situated near to the junction of Aqueduct Road and Bolton Road in Blackburn.

Scope of Works at Aqueduct Road

  • The works at Aqueduct Road included the construction of a 10.30m internal diameter detention tank with 650m3 storage, including backdrop pipework, storm pumps and rising mains. Modifications to an existing brick CSO chamber including extending the external walls and constructing internal reinforced weir walls, complete with powered screen. Opencut pipework ranging from 225-900mm diameter and manhole chambers ranging from 1200-3000mm diameter.
  • The scope of works on Bolton Road included construction of a reinforced CSO chamber, complete with powered screen opencut and trenchless pipework ranging from 375-1200mm diameter manhole chambers ranging from 1500-3000mm diameter.
